The terms that recur
in the work.
A working dictionary of the language used across essays, podcasts, and consulting. Updated as new terms earn their place.
First Draft
The version of yourself assembled before you were old enough to question it. Built from inheritance: family, circumstance, culture, the accidental shape of a particular childhood. It works well enough to keep you functional and rarely well enough to keep you fully alive. Most people spend their lives polishing the first draft, mistaking refinement for authorship.
Second Draft
The version of yourself you choose to write — consciously, deliberately, against the grain of inheritance. Not a fantasy and not a finished state. A discipline. The decision, repeated daily, to author rather than inherit. The newsletter and the podcast carry the same name because both are practical work toward the same end.
The Examined Life
Socrates' phrase, the unexamined life is not worth living, taken seriously as a working method. Not philosophy as decoration. Philosophy as practice. The disciplined work of asking which beliefs are inherited, which are chosen, and what the difference is when the answer matters.
Reticular Activating System (RAS)
A network of neurons at the base of the brainstem whose primary function is filtering. Of the eleven million bits of information the nervous system processes every second, roughly forty reach conscious awareness. The RAS decides which forty — weighted by what it has been told matters. This mechanism is the neurological basis for what mystics have called the universe responding. Discussed at length in The Universe Doesn't Conspire. It Responds.
Narrative Authority
The condition of being the writer of the story rather than a character within it. Most people experience their lives as something happening to them. Narrative authority is the move — usually slow, occasionally sudden — from being narrated to narrating. The central work of Signal the Narrative consulting is helping people and organizations make this move at scale.
Self-Authorship
The disciplined act of writing yourself rather than being written. A working synonym for the second draft. Implies authorship as a practice, not a destination. The author is never finished; the practice continues until the writer does not.
The Interior Country
The territory inside a single mind that the waking world has no language for. The place mystics, philosophers, and poets keep returning to. The location of every meaningful rewrite. Discussed in The Sky Was Never the Limit. Your Mind Was.
Signal the Narrative
The consulting practice through which Mo works with founders, executives, and organizations whose narrative is not yet doing their work justice. The name reflects the conviction that signal — the deliberate transmission of who you actually are — is a strategic act, not a marketing one. Lives at signalthenarrative.com.
