The reticular activating system filters eleven million bits a second based on what you've told it matters. The conspiracy is neurological. An essay on identity, decision, and the mechanics of becoming.

Most people read that line and feel something.

A warmth. A recognition. A quiet yes from somewhere underneath the reasoning mind that has spent years being told the world doesn't work that way. Most people feel it and then dismiss it — because they have been trained their entire lives to distrust the things that feel true before they can be explained.

They are wrong. Not poetically. Not spiritually. Mechanically.

The brain contains a mechanism called the reticular activating system. A network of neurons sitting at the base of the brainstem whose primary function is filtering. Every second of every day your nervous system is processing eleven million bits of information. You are consciously aware of approximately forty of them.

The reticular activating system decides which forty. And it makes that decision based on one primary variable: what you have told it matters.

The sky is the ceiling of the room you agreed to live in. The interior country where mystics, poets, and philosophers found the raw material of authorship.

There is a place most people never find.

Not because it is hidden. Not because it requires a map or a guide or the right circumstances finally aligning. But because to find it you have to be willing to stop believing in the world you were handed and start building the one you were meant to inhabit.

The sky was never the limit. The sky is just the ceiling of the room you agreed to live in.

Marcus Aurelius sat with an empire on his shoulders and chose the interior kingdom as his primary address. Nietzsche walked alone through the mountains and let the altitude strip away every borrowed idea until only the original ones remained. Coelho's shepherd crossed the desert not to find treasure but to discover that the treasure was always the crossing.

They were all going to the same place. The place beyond the sky.
